Energy Share of Wyoming, a non-profit agency that has provided energy assistance to households in need across the state, is asking for the public's support for the new year. According to a media release, the agency hopes to raise more than $125,000 to help more than 400 families statewide.

Officials with Energy Share say public support in the past has allowed the organization to assist thousands of needy families.

Based on a needs assessment, the Salvation Army determines who will receive energy assistance taking into account the amount of funds Energy Share of Wyoming currently has. To be considered for assistance, the agency says applicants must have exhausted all other resources and alternative means of assistance.

Individuals and families at or above 185 percent of the Federal Poverty Level receive first consideration and priority is given to senior citizens and those with disabilities.

Qualified applicants may receive up to $400 per household and must be Wyoming residents. According to last year's figures, the average amount of assistance for each qualified applicant was $284.

The agency raised nearly $100,000 last year from private and corporate donations and assisted around 240 families in 11 counties across Wyoming.

Those interested in supporting the agency can contact their local Salvation Army. You can call (877) 461-5719 to locate your local field representative. Donations to the agency are tax-deductible.
