A program that helps low-income Wyoming students graduate from high school and prepare for college will continue for seven more years thanks to a $3.6 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education.
The GEAR UP Wyoming Program is a partnership among the University of Wyoming, the state's seven community colleges and the Wyoming Department of Education.
Judy Trujillo is the program's grant manager. She says students in the GEAR UP Wyoming Program enroll in college at a much higher rate than the 15% of Wyoming's low-income students who enroll in college.
Trujillo says students can enter the program any time starting in 7th grade. The program will serve a minimum of 2,000 students statewide each project year and will continue to assist them through their first year of college.
