As we reported last week, Sheridan's Local Food Expo will be teaming up with the Earth Day Festival on April 20 for what event planners say should be a massive event at Sheridan College's Golden Dome.

Ace Young, public relations and marketing director for RENEW, says the two paired up out of a desire to increase awareness about not just healthy foods but also to share ways to build a sustainable community.

The first event will take place on Friday, April 19 with a special beer, cheese and chocolate pairing at the Black Tooth Brewing Company's conference room from 5 to 7 p.m. Following that will be a forum where local food and drink producers will answer questions about Earth-friendly backyard and commercial production. Young says on April 20, when the main event takes place, there will be plenty of activities for people of all ages.

He says the first Earth Day Festival took place roughly 40 years ago and it grew out of a need to take care of the planet, but today he says he's noticing more people becoming aware of and concerned about environmental issues.

Again, the festival and expo kicks off at 9 a.m. on April 20 in Sheridan College's Golden Dome with a presentation on 125 years of local food production in Sheridan County. After that, Young says there will be free workshops, booths for vendors, crafts for the kids and plenty of raffles and giveaways.
