A report recently released by the Wyoming Department of Health shows that 1 in 4 Wyoming adults have high blood pressure, and nearly 1 in 3 have high cholesterol. Cardiologist Dr. Michael Brennan with the Big Horn Heart Center in Sheridan says that there can be many factors that lead to heart disease.
While exercise and proper diet can go a long way in keeping heart problems at bay, for some, healthy living simply isn't enough. Dr. Brennan points out that over the past 10 to 15 years he's seen a dramatic decrease in the price of prescription medications.
Routine checkups can go a long way in preventing heart disease, especially considering two of the major risk factors; high cholesterol and high blood pressure typically don't show any symptoms.
Brennan said that avoiding salt and alcohol are two big preventive steps that we can all take to help prevent vascular disease, which is the most common killer in our society.
