JACKSON, Wyo. (AP) - A saddle bronc rider has died from injuries he suffered during competition at the Jackson Hole Rodeo. Teton County Coroner Bob Campbell says the victim of the Wednesday night accident was 20-year-old Nicolas Gillett of Cody.
Campbell says Gillett died of a skull fracture that was caused either when the horse stepped on him or rolled on him. Jackson police Lt. Bob Gilliam says Gillett's left spur got tangled in his saddle and the bucking horse dragged him before rolling on him.
Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association spokesman Jim Bainbridge says rodeo fatalities are rare and most occur in bull riding. Bainbridge says the Jackson Hole Rodeo is not sanctioned by the PRCA, and the cowboy who was killed was not a PRCA member.
