The Johnson County Commissioners, at recent meetings, discussed and/or acted on a number of smaller issues ranging from the appointment of deputy county coroners to a possible agreement for an indoor shooting range.
County Emergency Management Coordinator Marilyn Connolly brought a grant application before the commission for their approval and signature for a Homeland Security Grant for FY 2013.The amount of the grant was for $23,000 and is similar to other grants approved by the county in recent years.
She also reported that the State has reviewed the county's recently completed Hazard Mitigation Plan and recommended only minor changes. The document will now go to FEMA for their approval.
A public hearing was held on the transfer of a package liquor license from Canny, Inc. to Good 2 Go/Tammy Webb/Interstate Exxon.
The transfer was approve 2-1 with Commissioner Jim Hicks voting “nay.”
County Coroner Dave Harness sent a letter to the commissioners asking for their approval on his appointment of Sean Sullivan and Kelly Carroll as Deputy Coroners. The commisioners said he had no legal reason to ask their approval but they made a motion to approve the appointments anyway.
The deputy coroners will be paid on a per call-out basis.
Discussions have been ongoing between the commissioners on the possibility of having an indoor shooting range on county-owned land near the airport. Concerns about the county's possible liability stemming from the range have prompted the commissioners to seek the professional opinion of their insurance carrier, who will put his opinion in writing that the county would not be held liable for damages.
