SCSD2 Plans to Rebuild Coffeen Elementary

Coffeen Elementary is next up on the list of District 2 elementary schools to be re-built, and construction will begin following the current Meadowlark Elementary reconstruction project.

Director of Elementary Education for District 2, Scott Stults, explains.

The new Meadowlark school has a scheduled move-in date of August 2012, which would open the old Highland Park for Coffeen students to occupy during the reconstruction.

Stults says that reconstruction projects not only meet physical needs presented by an aging building, but also represent a reward that Coffeen Elementary has earned by way of its performance in the last few years.

Deeper than a statistical test scoring level, Stults says, the school has made student advances in student learning and culture through different programs such as “Leader In Me”.

Stults says they've seen academic increases as a result of the program, more confidence in students, and furthermore, kids finding better ways to deal with personal problems.

The Leader in Me program teaches the "7 Habits of Highly Effective People", a book by Stephen R. Covey. Stults explained that the students are “taking more responsibility for the things that they do in school”. For example, student greeters stand at the front doors, welcoming everyone entering the school each morning.

Funding for the new school will go for approval during the 2012 Legislative session.
