Cloud Peak Energy, Inc., has contracted to ship 16 million metric tons of coal per year to Asia via a port in Washington.
The Billings Gazette reports the coal will come from the Spring Creek and Youngs Creek Mines, north of Sheridan.
Cloud Peak is now in the process of securing permits for expansion of the Gateway Pacific Terminal's capacity. Operation is anticipated to begin in 2018.
