City Receives Updated Flood Plain Maps

The City of Sheridan presented the updated draft flood plain maps during a City Council work session on Wednesday. Updates to flood plain maps usually takes some time but the process was extended in the Sheridan area due to the amount of updated contour information submitted to the Army Corps of Engineers. City Public Works Director Nic Bateson says the City and Sheridan County will now review the maps.

It was stressed several times that the new maps are drafts and a preliminary look at what the final maps will show.

It could still be another year before the final maps would be adopted by the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The City and County must wait until that process is complete before the data in the maps can be used to help govern development. With the process already taking so long, officials are eager to use the new data since the last update to the flood plain maps was completed in 1976.
