Citizen Speaks On Century Club's Behalf For License Renewal

Liquor license renewals were up for approval at the last Buffalo City Council meeting, and one citizen spoke on behalf of the Century Club saying they should not be blamed for a death that occurred there earlier this fall in an altercation between two patrons.

Edna Young spoke in favor of renewing the Century Club's license during the public comment portion of the public hearing. She said rumor and hearsay have run rampant in Buffalo since the incident occurred and she had a few thoughts she wanted the council to consider.

Young also said the owners of the Century have taken measures to improve security at the club like installing security cameras and cooperated with local law enforcement every way they can.

Later in the meeting the council approved all license renewals but the Century Club, giving owner James Eklund a chance to address the council on the measures he has taken to improve safety at his establishment.

Eklund said security cameras have been installed throughout the bar and they have helped with the investigation into the incident. Bartender Ryan Money said they have implemented a no tolerance policy for fighting and have called police when they happen. He also said police have conducted nightly walk-throughs of the bar since the death and that, along with the security cameras, have curbed a lot of negative behavior.

The council approved the Century Club's liquor license renewal.
