Casper to Hear Public Comment on Open Carry at Public Meetings

CHEYENNE (AP) - The Casper City Council will hold a public hearing next week on making it illegal for people to openly carry guns at public meetings.

The Casper Star-Tribune (http://tinyurl.com/68vs9jq) reported the forum will be held Tuesday even though some members would rather have state lawmakers pass a statewide law on the issue.

Casper Mayor Paul Bertoglio favors that option but says the hearing could help give state lawmakers an idea of what people think of the proposal.

The proposed ban would apply to guns and other deadly weapons.

State law already makes it illegal to carry a concealed weapon at council meetings but it doesn't say anything about people who may openly carry one.

Critics, like the Wyoming Gun Owners Association, say the ban isn't legal and isn't necessary.
