A-C Student Named Best State Poet Two Years Running

Arvada-Clearmont sophomore Sara Ellingrod has been named Wyoming Poetry Outloud Competition 2012 winner, and will move on to compete in the national competition for the second year in a row.

This is the third straight year a student from Arvada-Clearmont has won the Wyoming-leg of the competition. Linda Crawford teaches 7th through 12th grade English at A-C. She says the school puts an emphasis on poetry, and Sara is an example of that work.

Along with Sara's personal prize of $200 and books, she earned her school a $500 grant that it will use to purchase poetry books. Crawford says the skill - reading poetry out loud - builds additional skills.

Last year at the national competition Sara was one of only three freshman in the entire competition. While she didn't quite make the semifinals, Crawford says they will use what they learned last time to improve on that performance. She competes during her trip to D.C. May 13th to the 15th. First place carries a $20,000 prize. The Wyoming Arts Council sends out registration info for Poetry Out Loud each September.
