The Buffalo Police Department has received notification of a new telephone scam and are warning residents to be aware and not be taken advantage of.
The scam involves a caller who poses as a police official in Mexico that says a loved one has been involved in an accident and needs money or they will go to jail.
Buffalo Police Chief Jason Carder tells us what the new twist in the old scam is.
Carder said the safest thing to do for those that may receive these calls is to get any contact information the caller will release (phone number, person that called) and then contact the police or sheriff's office and let them handle the situation.
Carder also said the police and sheriff usually know about these types of scams beforehand. He stressed that anyone receiving these types of calls should contact authorities and never send money or release any information to the caller.
