Buffalo, Jo Co Agree to Move Forward With Joint Engineer

The Johnson County Commissioners and the Buffalo City Council heard final proposals from City Planner Zach Montgomery and County Planner Rob Yingling at their meetings Tuesday and both entities decided to back the hiring of a joint city/county engineer.

This position will be the first of it's kind in the state, according to Montgomery, and therefore no blueprint for how to make the position viable exists. It will be trial and error with a lot of compromise between all of the entities involved.

Montgomery explained to the commissioners how the position will be created.

There are still a number of other concerns, such as where the engineer will be housed, who will furnish a vehicle for the position, and how expenses will be repaid should one entity hire the engineer full-time or if one should back out of the agreement. These details, according to both planners, can still be worked out in the next couple of months, as a final contract won't be signed between the entities and the new engineer until he or she is hired, more than likely at the beginning of the new year.

The planners, though, feel the need to begin the advertising and interviewing process now to meet the January timeline for hiring a new engineer.
