CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) - The Bureau of Land Management has decided to go ahead with a planned roundup of nearly 2,000 wild horses in southwest Wyoming. Critics of the roundup didn't like the use of helicopters, but the BLM says there's no good alternative for such a large roundup.

The agency says the roundup scheduled to begin October 1st is needed to cull excess wild horses from two areas in Sweetwater County. The federal agency plans to round up 1,950 wild horses, and treat and release 100 mares with fertility-control vaccines. It intends to remove 1,580 horses and put them up for adoption. The gather is expected to conclude November 8th.
