Blackfeet Tribe approves law enforcement plan

BROWNING, Mont. (AP) - The Blackfeet Tribal Business Council has approved a resolution to take over its own law enforcement responsibilities. The council on Thursday approved the plan to replace the police department run by the Bureau of Indian Affairs with its own tribal Department of Public Safety. The BIA has run the police department on the reservation for about seven years after a report in 2003 exposed evidence of poorly trained law enforcement officers, botched case reports and political interference from tribal council members. The tribal force was fired and the BIA hired 32 uniformed
officers.
