A local teacher has received national recognition. Lauri Graves of Big Horn Elementary has won the Presidential Award for Excellence in math and science. She teaches the fifth grade. The information comes directly from the school.
According to the release she was recommended by a professor from the University of Wyoming – Dr. Scott Shaw, who teaches entomology.
The Presidential Award comes directly from President Barack Obama. The local teacher is one of 102 math and science teachers chosen from across the country. The winners were selected by a panel of scientists, mathematicians and educators following an initial selection process undergone at the state level.
As part of the honor, Graves, who was named Wyoming Teacher of the Year in 2011, will receive a $10,000 award from the National Science Foundation later this year in Washington D.C.
