Last weekend, March 23rd, the Buffalo High School Forensics team traveled to Sturgis, SD for a last chance preparation tournament before the National Qualifier next week.
The team did extremely well with nearly everyone placing in their events.
In Lincoln-Douglas Debate, three BHS competitors received trophies. Nicholas Henry and Cody Giles tied for 3rd, and Brianna Taylor won all of her rounds and was able to bring home the 1st place trophy.
In Congressional Debate, Rex Yeigh and Heidi Hauck had outstanding performances, with Yeigh receiving 3rd place and Hauck earning the 1st place trophy.
In Extemporaneous Speech both of the Buffalo competitors once again had great success. Mark Carranza and Cody Giles both advanced to the final round, where Carranza earned the 5th place award, and Giles, who got straight 1st place ranks for the entire tournament, won 1st place.
Coach Walter Farwell said it was the first time the team had been to the Sturgis tournament, but he was happy to have the competition for the team.
“We were so glad that they hosted this one-day prep tournament. We have a long wait between our State tournament and our National Qualifier, so to have a chance to practice our craft is invaluable. And to have almost the entire team place in the top of their events is spectacular. It bodes well for them at the big show here in April, and hopefully some of them will qualify for and do well at the National Tournament later in the year.”
