BHNF Beetles On the Decline

BHNF Beetles On the Decline

Earlier this month, the Associated Press reported the pine beetle epidemic across the state is on the decline.

While there are still millions of acres damaged by the beetles, Forester with the Big Horn National Forest, Chris Thomas, says our area is one of the least affected.

Thomas said that to a great extent, an early freeze one fateful year was a blessing in disguise for the forest.

Thomas said there are still pockets of pine beetles in the Big Horn National Forest, but their population is taking a nosedive due to lack of host tree species.
