Sheridan Media's Chris Foy brings us part three of his series on homelessness in Sheridan County - and what the community is doing to help.

The Sheridan Community Shelter is located on the grounds of the Veteran’s Administration Medical Center, and staff and volunteers there have been providing service to homeless individuals since 1998. Each night, the building can accommodate up to 30 individuals, with facilities for men, women and families.

Twelve-year-old Noah DeGrange started his first day of volunteer work at the shelter on Monday. He explains why he chose to spend his spring break helping others.

The shelter's director, former drill sergeant Larry Penrice says he's proud of Noah for his selfless decision to volunteer - and what he calls his wisdom far beyond his twelve years.

Ethan Boone, director of communications for Volunteers of America for the Northern Rockies, says an annual fundraiser for the shelter will take place on April 4th.

Last year, the Empty Bowl event raised $21,000 and Penrice says it's everyone's responsibility to be good stewards of what they receive from the community and make any funding go a long way towards helping the men, women and sometimes children who walk through the shelter's doors.

Penrice tells the story of Edward Smith, one such man who recently passed away. He came to the shelter near death, unable to afford the oxygen that was keeping him alive. Smith's name still rests on a placard on the walls of the shelter and Penrice says he'll never forget him.

Penrice says at the shelter they draw on the the brotherhood found on the battlefield and he says it plays a huge role in the recovery process.

The VOA Sheridan Community Shelter is mainly supported by donations. If you'd like to help, either with a gift or donation of time, food, clothing and more visit http://www.voanr.org/Explore-Car....
