Bald Eagle Survey Results Reported

Volunteers reported 310 eagle sightings in the Powder River Basin during the 2013 Midwinter Bald Eagle Survey conducted by the Bureau of Land Management. Bald eagles accounted for 179 total sightings on the morning of Jan. 18. Volunteers who conducted the survey also reported 108 golden eagles and 23 eagles of undetermined species.

These numbers reflect more eagle activity due to relatively warmer weather. According to a media release from the BLM, the highest concentration of eagles in the Basin is recorded in the foothills along I-90 between Sheridan and Buffalo, where they frequently harvest the abundance of roadkill on the highway.

The survey is conducted by volunteers, and the information collected helps BLM officials assess the viability of local habitat.
