This week is Bear Awareness Week, and the reason is twofold: first, bears are waking up from hibernation hungry, and second, people need to take heed. Erin Edge with Defenders of Wildlife says bears are being sighted in areas where they haven't been for decades, thanks to successful recovery efforts. However, the restoration of the bear means they come to unexpected places looking for a salad.
Edge says it's a good idea to keep an eye out for signs of bears, and sound can be a great preventative measure for hikers, campers and other mountain visitors who want to keep the bears at bay.
Last year, at least three bears came into Sheridan City limits. Mostly, they come into town via the Little Goose Creek by accident.
