An air-conditioning unit at the Johnson County Courthouse has failed and will be replaced before the summer heat becomes an issue.

The unit maintains a constant temperature in the computer room of the courthouse and is essential to keep the high-tech gadgets functioning.

Rick Durfee, maintenance manager for the building, explained the problem to the commissioners.

The unit, Durfee said, mounts on the wall inside the computer room and is attached to a compressor on the outside of the building. Both the unit and compressor need to be replaced.

The adjacent assessor's office has an identical unit that is still working, Durfee said, but the commissioners were concerned it may break down as well.

They wanted to know if one larger unit could replace both smaller units, to try to save money for the County, and Durfee said he would look into the matter.

The commissioners approved Durfee to gather information, to make a decision on the matter and to keep them informed.
