Fifteen illegal, abandoned, or escaped campfires have been discovered in the Bighorn National Forest over the past three weeks. National Forest Public Affairs Specialist Susie Douglas said that firefighters have responded to five wildfires in the Bighorn National Forest this summer; three were caused by lightning and two were escaped campfires.
Douglas says that there are legal ramifications for those that don't tend to their campfires properly.
Currently there are no fire restrictions in place on the National Forest, but that can quickly change due to a number of different factors.
