4th Raising Readers Bookfest and Feast is Saturday, Free This Year

Another Raising Readers Bookfest and Feast, the fourth annual, will take place Saturday morning from 8 to 11 am in Sheridan Junior High School gymnasium and cafeteria.

Raising Reader's volunteer Amy Schaffer says the event is free for the first time this year.

Included in the raffle will be flights to Denver and also trips to Thermopolis and Red Lodge.

Some of the storybook characters at the event will be the Cat in the Hat, Mother Goose, Thing One and Thing Two, Winnie the Pooh and his friends, and Harry Potter.

Jolene Olson, Raising Readers executive director, said last year the event attracted around 500 people, but added that shouldn't keep people away as there will be plenty to do at the event Saturday morning.

She explains what Raising Readers advocates in terms of getting children reading at an early age.

Raising readers gives away new books to all children as part of their well-child health care visits and immunization clinics.

A volunteer based organization, they give books during kids' medical office visits at each 2, 4, 6, 12, 15 and 18 months, and from the age of 2, 3, 4, and 5-years old for a total of ten books, encouraging parents to read to their kids. They gave out 2,875 books in 2010 and have distributed 1,833 so far this year.

There's plenty to do this Saturday in Sheridan; be sure to check out the schedule of events under the news drop-down menu at the top of this page.
