Thursday night the conference rooms at the Sheridan Holiday Inn took on the sparkle and glitter of Christmas for the nineteenth annual Festival of Trees, a fundraiser for Special Olympics.
Anita Badgett has helped organize the event since its inception but has been involved with Special Olympics far longer.
The Festival of Trees event helps Special Olympians attend the statewide competitions. Badgett explains what the money raised is used for.
Badgett says the competition is more than winning medals.
Now, that's something we all can be working on. Michael Schanaman has competed in Special Olympics since 1981 and and tells what he competes in.
And has he won anything?
Badgett says it's more than medals and shares what makes these Special Olympians special.
Last year over 12-thousand dollars was raised. Christmas trees, wreathes, centerpieces were all on display and up for auction. Penny raffles and a silent auction were also part of the fundraising. Money raised will be split between the four Special Olympic teams in Sheridan which include Easter Seals, Jodi's Heart, RENEW, and Sheridan School District number 2.
