For the past several weeks, we've been helping to promote the upcoming “Out of the Darkness” Walk to Prevent Suicide event. Under the national umbrella of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, organizer for the Sheridan walk, Vanessa Hastings, explains what the money raised will go toward.
Hastings explains the benefits of having a chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.
Hastings says that because we're coming out of a recession, they've made a small goal to reach of $10,000.
Guest speaker during the opening ceremony will be BJ Ayers of Cheyenne, who founded Grace for 2 Brothers after she lost two of her three sons to suicide. Walkers will have opportunities during the walk to honor those who have died by suicide. Hastings invites survivors to submit a photo of their loved one for inclusion on a “Memory Board” for display during the walk.
Check-in for the “Out of the Darkness” walk gets under way at 10 a.m., Saturday, September 11th on Grinnell Plaza. The 1.5-mile walk starts at 11 a.m. and will end at Grinnell as well. If you would like to register to walk, or would like to make a donation online, click here:
