Anne Washut Aksamit, 86, of Sheridan, WY, died Sunday, March 1, 2009 at her daughter’s residence.
Mrs. Aksamit was born December 17, 1922 in the mining camp of Kooi to George and Louise (Selig) Washut. The family moved to Monarch in 1923, as her dad worked as a motorman for the mine. She lived most of her adult life in Sheridan, but grew up and attended schools in Monarch and Ranchester. Anne was baptized and received her First Communion at St. Thomas Church in Monarch.
She married the love of her life, Joe Aksamit, May 27, 1940 in Hardin, Montana. They spent 58 years together until the Lord took Joe May 10, 1998. During the 1950’s, Anne worked at the Sheridan Inn Dining Room and waited on such celebrities as Robert Taylor and Ursala Theis. From 1960 to 1963 she worked at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Yakima, Washington in the Central Supply Department. The family moved back to Sheridan in 1963 and started a dairy business on Beaver Creek. They retired from the dairy business in 1976, built their new home and moved back to Sheridan.
Anne was an active member of CCW—Mother Cabrini Group since 1976. She served as funeral home chairman for the Mother Cabrini Group for many years, made stuffed bears for the Pediatric Unit at Memorial Hospital, made medals for the newborns in the nursery at Memorial Hospital, and also made and mailed these medals out to the newborns congratulating the babies baptized at Holy Name Church. She made items for the annual Church Bazaar fund raising, worked special Holiday Church dinners, and was always available to bake or provide food the Church functions. Anne and Joe were named “Couple of the Month” for February, 1995.
Anne was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church, and was a volunteer at the V. A. Hospital where she accumulated 1000 hours. She was a member of the American Legion and the V. F. W. axillaries, and an active member of the Polka Club.
Her hobbies included crocheting, needlework, having family dinners, playing cards, gardening, bowling, reading, and she loved to dance. Her family was very important to her and she was instrumental in all of them getting a college education.
Anne was preceded in death by her husband, Joe; her parents, George Washut, and George and Louise Manzek; her sister, Rose Lowe; two brothers, George J. and Walter W. Washut; and nephew, Lance Crpl. Walter J. Washut; and nieces Wendella Washut, and Gloria Jean Spence.
She is survived by her daughter, Karen Mulholland, and husband, Tom; her son, Larry Aksamit, and wife, Betty; 4 grandchildren, Kevin Custis, ( Nina), Kenny Custis, (Lynn), Danny Aksamit, and Christina Aksamit; 5 great grandchildren, Jennifer, Kyle, Garrett, and Kolin Custis, and Landon Aksamit.
Rosary will be 7:00 P. M. Wednesday, March 4, 2009 at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Funeral Liturgy will be 10:00 A. M. Thursday, March 5, 2009 at Holy Name Catholic Church with Fathers Thomas Ogg and Ronald Stolcis as Celebrants. Interment will be in the Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.
