Summer officially started in the Sheridan area at 5:09 pm Wednesday - and this is what it looked like just an hour later. While most of the nation was sweltering it out with temperatures above 90 we peaked out at 78 degrees. Temperatures are headed up however, with Thursday expected to hit 84, Friday 90, Saturday 91 and - get ready for this - 102 on Sunday.

Now that the new elementary school building is up and the old is down Groathouse Construction Inc. is busy tearing up the old and putting down a new parking lot for the Big Horn Campus. The addition of more parking spaces will be a welcome addition to the campus as will the landscaping when it is finished in August.

On the final barrel race of the day Whitney Simmons of Decker ran a quick 18.04 to win Senior Barrels on Saturday afternoon. Whitney was participating in the Senior events (ages 14-18) of the Young Riders Rodeo held at the Sheridan County Fairgrounds. There was something for everyone up to the age of 18.

The road to stardom started at the Best Western Sheridan Center for Jordan Smith of Gillette. Jordan competed in the first leg of the Texaco Country Showdown and came out on top in the local competition held Friday evening. He will move on in the competition at the Montana State Fair in Great Falls on July 27th and 28th.

The Big Horn Volunteer Fire Department Annual Pancake Breakfast will be held right here on the concrete apron and inside, just beyond the four overhead doors, this Saturday. It is free but donations will be accepted and you can even enter the raffle for a 37" Flat Screen TV. Everyone is welcome so bring your appetite and show up between 7 & 10 am.

Firefighters work to extinguish the forest fire in Guernsey State Park in Southeast Wyoming. The fire is now 95 percent contained.

Around 2:00 pm Wednesday this Chevrolet Cavalier apparently tangled with a cement truck and ended up upside down on the west side of Coffeen Avenue near the 5100 block. Two Rocky Mountain Ambulances were on the scene and at least one person was seen being loaded into one of the ambulances. Also responding to the accident were the highway patrol and unit 205 from the Sheridan Rural Fire Department.

On Tuesday afternoon the arch at Sheridan College was seen coming down but the golden dome still stands in the background. We're not talking McDonald's golden arches here but we are talking about the main entry way into Sheridan College which is now temporarily closed and will remain closed for a week or more.
