Jason Vela, the Chief of Police at Sheridan College, was recently appointed to an advisory position for the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights. The Commission is a “bipartisan fact-finding agency of the federal government,” and each state has an advisory committee.

We're just two days away from the 2010 Capitol Christmas Tree, which will hail from Wyoming for the first time ever, arriving in Sheridan and Buffalo on its journey to Washington D.C. A Dayton couple had the rare opportunity to be present when the tree was cut down. Sheridan Media's Mary Jo Johnson has their story.

U.S. Senator John Barrasso received the “Friend of Farm Bureau” award at the Wyoming Farm Bureau Federation 2010 annual meeting in Cody earlier this week. U.S. Senator Mike Enzi and U.S. Representative Cynthia Lummis also received the “Friend of Farm Bureau” award.

The recent announcement that Clark Fairbanks has resigned as Director of the Wyoming Girls School in Sheridan to accept a similar position in Gillette has brought nothing but praise from his colleagues. Wyoming DFS Director Tony Lewis.

To say that Wyoming Governor Dave Freudenthal has had issues with the State's education system is probably a gross understatement. Freudenthal says that the results from the recent General Election is a clear indication that his concerns are echoed by many.

The 20th Annual Community Holiday Dinner in Sheridan will take place the first Sunday in December. A week from Saturday there will be a food drive at Albertson's, Safeway, Wal-Mart and Warehouse Market from 10 am to 1 pm.

A quick run to the corner store is an errand no longer possible in many rural areas of Wyoming as small grocery stores are disappearing. And while Sheridan may not be considered a rural area, Bino's Grocery did close their doors earlier this year after many years of service in the community.

At 11 o'clock sharp in the VA Medical Center Auditorium Thursday morning, veterans were honored in the 2010 Veterans Day ceremony. Sheridan Media's Mary Jo Johnson has the report.
