Crews from the Ranchester Volunteer Fire Department responded to a fire in northern Sheridan County at approximately 5:30 pm Tuesday. The fire is located on Ash Creek Road near the Youngs Creek Mine 13 miles north of Sheridan.

The Ranchester Town Council voted to ban commercial fireworks at their meeting Tuesday night. Ranchester in the past has allowed commercial fireworks on the 4th of July, however, after the Council's decision to enact a ban, they will not be allowed at all this year.

The bulk of Tuesday's Sheridan County Commission meeting revolved around a request for a conditional use permit from Dennis and Shirley Cathey to operate a portable sawmill on their property at 498 Wildcat Road. The County Planning and Zoning Commission denied the request at their June 7th meeting.

Wildfires are now burning on about 6,000 acres in southwestern South Dakota and northeastern Wyoming. The Highlands Fire has scorched about 400 acres near Newcastle is 60 percent contained. It has destroyed five structures and damaged two others.

Wyoming Governor, Matt Mead, visited the Arapaho fire in the south-central portion of the state and praised Wyoming's wildfire fighters, who have been working a lot of overtime this season.

The Wyoming Game and Fish Department will offer leftover licenses for elk, deer and antelope to the public.

A wildfire about 30 miles southwest of Laramie has prompted new evacuations.

Phase two of the Wyoming/Park reconstruction project will begin in about a month, this after the Sheridan City Council Monday night awarded the bid for the project to ICM of Sheridan in the amount of $4.3 million. City of Sheridan Engineer Lane Thompson.

The Sheridan Recreation District will be holding the 2nd annual “Freedomfest” tomorrow that will include a number of different activities to keep kids of all ages entertained. Recreation District Executive Director Richard Wright.

A light agenda is scheduled for the Johnson County Commissioners this Tuesday, July 3.

The Airport Board will give the commission its yearly report and quarterly reports will be heard from the Criminal Justice Center Joint Powers Board and the Board of Health.
