The Sheridan Broncs only had 17 plays on offense in the second half, while Rock Springs had 40-plus.

Play #16 made the difference.

Trailing 24-20 with less than 2 minutes to go on 4th down from their own 30, Carl Askins screened a pass to Colson Coon who took care of the rest and ran to the promised land for the go ahead score.

The defense was able to hold the next 4 plays, and the Broncs won the battle of the 4A undefeated teams, 27-24.

Sheridan got on the board first when Mathew Ketner returned a punt 37 yards for a touchdown to make it 7-nothing.

Rock Springs would put a long drive together and tie the score at 7, and it would stay the way when the 1st quarter ended.

In the 2nd quarter, a Michael Greer field goal put the Broncs ahead 10-7.

The Broncs would then cash in on an interception, and Askins would hook up with Coon to make 17-7.

Not much else happened between that and halftime.

In the 3rd quarter, Sheridan would take advantage of another turnover, and Greer would kick another FG to push the score up to 20-7.

Then Rock Springs would hog the ball.

The Tigers would get into the end zone early in the 4th quarter, to cut the score to 20-14 and add another later to take the lead 21-20.

RS would then cash in on a turnover with a field goal of their own, to go ahead 24-20 with 2 minutes to go, but that ended up being one of the turning points of the game, as Sheridan was able to stop the opposition from scoring a touchdown.

Then with their backs against the wall, and facing 4th down from their own 30, Askins and Coon pulled off what would be the winning TD play with 1:32 to go, and the defense was able to hold after that.

With the win Sheridan is now 4-0 on the 2021 season and all alone in 1st place in Class 4A.

The next game is scheduled for Friday, September 24th at Cheyenne East at 6pm.

The Thunderbirds are the defending state champs.
